Dilston Mill gardens
Dilston Mill is in
a beautiful and peaceful setting, where there has
been a mill for centuries. It is in a unique
position on the banks of Devils Water - the last
mill before it flows into the Tyne. Its garden
follows a delightful bend in the river and is
overlooked by the historic ruins of Dilston
Castle. In the garden is the site of the preserved
ruins of a medieval bridge and later aquaduct.
There are gentle paths through the garden with
tables, chairs and benches dotted about for
viewing the fascinating flow of the river -
sometimes quiet, sometimes roaring and observing
the wonderful variety of visiting bird life, from
dippers, swallows, martins and wagtails to herons,
kingfishers, ducks and goosanders. The garden is a
delight throughout the year, from spring bulbs and
blossom right through autumn colours to magical
frosts and frozen river water under snowblankets.
